To think that a 24 year old will refuse to buy a car because he can text his friends is fucking stupid. The 24 year old doesn't have his license or doesn't drive, because:
-He doesn't need it due to where he lives (see above)
-He can't afford it

Young Americans are probably less likely to get a license but that has doesn't necessarily mean they aren't driving. Driving and having a license / insurance can be two separate things. There are plenty of people that drive without insurance every day (you have to have insurance in California and yet many don't), and there are certainly plenty that drive without a license. Registration? Same thing.
Also, people don't stop texting just because they get behind a wheel. At least not in So Cal. Even with the prospect of getting a ticket, people text while driving en mass every single day in So Cal and I imagine that it is the same in most parts of the country.
The US is a car-centric culture. We are defined by what we drive. I just don't see that changing because of the internet or mass transit.

Totally disagree. The Internet definitely has the potential to change how we move around, and has already changed how many people commute on a daily basis. Telecommuting is a prime example of that: many don't even need to get out of their homes to make a living anymore. Speaking only for myself, I don't even own a car and don't see a need for it. Bus routes are fine for my needs, and when we do need a car, we rent. Problem solved.
I'm definitely looking forward to the day where "smart cars" take out the human element out of driving, if only to get rid of drunks and other assorted assholes out there.

My kid will have his license and a car on his 16th birthday. That's a gift I will be giving myself. 1.5 more years. Can't come fast enough.
