The president has imposed duties on Canadian steel and aluminum. Counter duties are coming.

I believe it is counterproductive and will drive up pricing. I don't know all the issues but it seems that it may be a NAFTA ploy to either squash it altogether, or get the upper hand in talks.

Interested in what our American members think on this one.

Apparently most of the aluminum for American beer cans is from Canada, glass bottle companies will rejoice!

Hoping this is not the future of relations.

It’s all just posturing, IMHO.

Everything will work out in the end.

Hoping so.

Worrying about national security with Canada seems paranoid and unrealistic.

Bingo. Everyone else taxes the shit out of American exports. Trump just finally has the balls to do something about it.

Isn't this about the 10th time that a massive trade war that would cause a depression, followed by WW3, was guaranteed because of some minor negotiating by Trump ?

Don't even the professional liars of the left get tired of this sooner or later ?

Apparently not.

Gonna be a fun November with this horseshit as the only dem platform.

I don't think it's surprising that Donald Trump is doing this. The guy has made a serious effort at keeping all of his campaign promises and he was pretty clear on this issue during the election. I personally would like to see a world where tariffs don't exist anywhere, but that's idealism, not realism.

What is really astonishing is that I heard recently Bernie Sanders is now opposing Trump on these tariffs. Didn't he also bash NAFTA and other trade deals, and have nearly an identical International Trade platform except for maybe foreign aid?

Wow, the Democratic party is a mess.

This is your dipshit prime minister being completely obtuse. Of course Canada is not a national security issue to the United States. But the way in which Canada and Mexico have taken advantage of loop holes in the trade agreement is what is causing all the noise.

There is a lot of information out there on the topic. Bottom line is don't let Trudeau and Freeland lie to you.

What exactly did the left think that a businessman like Trump would do ?

The last 4 presidents approached trade and negotiation like politicians, with no interest whatsoever in America benefiting or 'winning' in any way.

Their only guiding principle was political / social goals, mostly to benefit themselves and friends in the future.

Trump is not a politician, but rather 100 % a businessman. DC can't even fathom the distinction or what it means / yields.

Benefiting America has been dormant since Reagan. There are very few old codgers left who even remember it as a concept.

This is an example of some of the potential damage that can happen when you have a complete idiot as PM and a cabinet chock full of incompetents (but they are "diverse" incompetents, grant them that). You basically get rolled over.

Read Nima Sanandaji's "Debunking Utopia," easily the most insightful matter written on the subject of Nordic socialism, and written by a leftist none-the-less by our NA standards.

Norway implemented a 40% rule meaning that all national corporate boards were required to have 40% of the boards seated by women. What were the results of the social engineering? Remarkably pathetic. In fact, many have complained that because of so many unqualified female board directors, it has actually given more power to a small group of domineering men because the females lack experience and qualifications in their particular assigned industries to convince the majority of thr boards, including their female peers.

This is relevant because this is where Trudeau and his puppeteers got the idea. I honestly don't think an idiot like Chrystia Freeland has full decision-making authority or even say on strategy on this matter.

Don't complain to me. I didn't vote for this disaster. And those who did probably just listen to what CBC or CTV tells them to do.

It's interesting how a country can elect somebody this stupid, incompetent, and worthless.

What explains this ? I don't want to go all Godwin, but it is like Hitler. It can't be explained except for widespread idiocy and sickness.

It's just totally irrational. How does the majority of a whole country fall for it ?

I hate to say, but this guy is actually worse than Obama. Obama could at least pretend that he was a senator, for unthinking people, and he did have a great criminal infrastructure to help him cheat.

Trudeau just can't be explained. He's such a worthless bastard that nothing could possibly be said to explain him being elected.

It's hard to watch.

How, you say? Easy. All the women decided to come out to vote, because he was handsome and had nice hair and they listened to CBC and CTV who told them that the current good PM was bad. Can't believe many males (non-gay) cast their vote his way.

Sorry, that's the only explanation I can come up with but I bet it's 80% accurate.
