I was just listening to Gary Jules's Mad World and it made me a little melancholy... in a good way. So I thought about the songs that bring tears to my eyes.

My number one is Cat in the Cradle by Harry Chapin. I can't get through that song without getting emotional. It's simply a beautiful and poignant song for me.

I'm pretty sure we've had this thread before but didn't have the patience to search for it.

Too many as I get older.

I agree about CITC as well, does the trick every time.

Lots of country - I can't listen to any longer, for this very reason.

A few of the more habitual offenders:

-A Love Without End, Amen
-Who You'd Be Today
-There Goes My Life
"Now, now, lay off Detroit. Them people is living in 'Mad Max' times." -Moe Syzlak

RIP To The King - Bob Probert 1965-2010

Songs ostensibly written to choke you up, but in fact quite silly instead -

-Patches
-Shannon
-Seasons in the Sun

For War / Vietnam, Billy Joel's Goodnight Saigon is pretty good.

I like the old Beatles dramatic, somber tunes -
-Hey Jude
-Long & Winding Road
-Lady Madonna
-Let it Be
-Fool on the Hill
-Guitar Gently Weeps
-Here Comes the Sun

In My Room by Brian Wilson / Beach Boys is a good one, as it's about his insanity and desire to never leave his bedroom again.

Ah yeah, Both Sides Now....reminds me then of "Send in the Clowns". A truly sad moody song.

I guess Loudon Wainright doesn't make the cut, with "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road".

Just thought of the Rundgren library -

-Hello It's Me
-Can We Still Be Friends
-I Saw the Light
-A Dream Goes on Forever
-Couldn't I Just Tell You

For me it's 10cc - "I'm Not In Love".

Doesn't really make sense, except that I listened to it over & over & over the night before my dad died, the next morning about 6 hours later.

35 years ago, and I still hate it when it pops up. I turn it off.
