I don't understand why the Big 10 is so enamored with Rutgers.
They should just go to 16
Pitt
Kansas
Pick 2 Louisville, Iowa St or K-State

I'm a Rutgers fan, so its great news as been bummed they've been shut of realignment to this point. While it would be a great move for Rutgers obviously, not so sure best for the Big 10, who have been able to retain their regional basis with their expansion to date. Rutgers' selling point is the NYC market; but the region is so oversaturated with pro sports, not really all big of a slice of it. They'd also be nothing more than a middling program in the Big 10, maybe like a Purdue and dont bring anything to the table in basketball.
A little skeptical nonetheless; its a package deal and Maryland will owe 50 million in exit fees.

Looks like Maryland approved the move officially. Rutgers to follow suit tomorrow. I would have preferred Rutgers go to the ACC as travel in the Big 10 is more prohibitive, but they are lucky to have a seat at the table rather than stay stuck in the Big Least, which isnt a viable conference anymore.

Hopefully Rutgers can keep more Jersey kids from leaving the state.Playing in the Big 10 would certainly help recruiting.....

It's all about $$$. Maryland will simply go from losing in the habitually losing in ACC football to the big 10. Will stink to not see MD playing UNC or Duke any longer though.
I think MD has more uniform combinations from Under Armour this year (they are what Nike is to Oregon) than they do wins.

Rutgers vs. Louisville tonight for the Big East title and BCS bowl, probably Orange Bowl. Future Big 10 vs. future ACC matchup. While I'm under no delusion that either team is elite; both are good/above average with some very good talent; and certainly this year no Big Least team should go to a major bowl. Yet, an exciting moment for a long suffering fan of traditionally losing program.

Indiana, Northwestern, Illinois, and Purdue have two new teams to fight over Big Ten mediocrity with.

Well, devastating loss for sad sack Rutgers, blowing what will be their only chance ever for a BCS bowl. But hey, they'll always have that one national championship to fall back on.

Nice of the east coast to set out a doormat for the real teams.

Hey, national champs in 1869 baby; sure there were only two teams, but they were 1-1!

It's a little sad to see Rutgers leave the Big East, but for obvious reasons the move is a no-brainer. The Big East football is dying a slow death.
Rutgers is going to have some rough seasons ahead. But I remember going to games 15 years ago when they were getting killed every weekend. I went to see them play Texas with Ricky Williams I believe. The lost 78-3 or something like that. If you told me at the time they were going to become a top team in the Big East and a top 25 team, I would have laughed. You never know what is going to happen down the road. all it takes is some overlooked players that turn out to be stars or a coach that raises the program up to another level.
Devils John Madden being interviewed:
Interviewer- How does it feel to cover Gomez?
Madden- I don't know. I don't cover 3rd line centers.

Yeah, this to me was their last big shot to get to a BCS/major bowl. Have a senior laden defense with 2-3 NFL caliber players and big playmaking receivers (though some with stone hands). As a fan, right up there with any gutwrenching loss I've seen- and my list includes 'the catch', Yanks epic choke against BoSox, Rangers...well there's a bunch of them.
They've had good players over the last eight years, just haven't had them all together at once to be an elite team, just for one season (2006 was closest, but hamstrung by a young quarterback). But they are really new in the big time college scene. They wanted to improve in the 80's from playing a mix of good programs and Patriot league type teams (e.g. Colgate). Too much too soon as they were a doormat almost since the inception of the Big East to halfway through Schiano's tenure. They had a couple decent years in the early 90's, but Doug Graber ran a dirty program (and still never went to a bowl). As you note, the blowout losses were staggering:
-Lou Holtz last game at ND, something like 66-0
-classless Syracuse relished running it up on them; one year they took a knee starting in the 3rd quarter to show them up, next year ran it up to 80-7
-Texas, VA Tech, BC, Pitt, Louisville- just a ton of lopsided ugly games
I agree it is unfortunate that the Big East collapsed and kind of microcosm of college football and the death of the regional game it was. If it had formed earlier (Joe Paterno had called for an eastern league in the 80's but was nixed by basketball schools) it may have been viable- essentially with the original Big East schools and Penn State.
At worst, they'll get crushed in the Big 10 and be on the level of Indiana. At best, every 5 years or so they'll have a good team; kind of like a Northwestern or Purdue and compete, but never get that one win that would send them to a major bowl.
