So I think I might luck out at work in 2013.
In my position I have basically 2 bosses - the Institutional Safety Manager who is my boss, and then his boss, the COO. Well my boss is retiring at the end of Feb and I was not planning on putting in for his position for a few reason
It's management and we have some inter-office personnel issues that I did not want to be involved with more than i currently am, its a non-union job, NO RAISES (the last 2-3 contracts did not give management raises), having to do certain investigations at work, among a few minor items. The only real pro to the job is that its around a 6k raise. But in my opinion the pros out way the cons by far.
So here's where the good luck part comes in to play. There was rumor going around that my boss's position was not going to be replaced, and that the workload would be split between me and the Security Director(who is in charge of the security officers and the switchboard, where the personnel issues are). Well last week I had meeting with my boss, the security director and the COO and here's the plan they came up with. They are in fact not going to replace my boss, and the job will basically be split between the SD and I. I'll get all of the safety aspects of the job, workplace injuries/comp, MSDS, asbestos, and some other items, and the rest goes to the SD. Which means he gets the two items i did not want to have to deal with at all, having the department underneath me, and dealing with investigations - mostly work place violence. So the deal is we will do the jobs for 6 months, and then both get a pay grade promotion. Meaning I'll become a Fire Safety Specialist, i wont be management, i'll stay union, I wont be incharge of the department personnel, and I still get a 3k raise.

Nice, congratulations; glad things played out well. While the extra 3 g's may be nice, often not worth the extra headache and allows to steer clear of the potential personnel issues referenced.

Thanks ED, thats exactly what I was thinking. If I had gotten the original job, the raise was around 6k, but it def wasnt worth the headaches. My boss actually told me a few weeks ago that the job wasn't worth it anymore.

I will admit, albeit grudgingly, health and safety is a great gig (I only say grudgingly because those guys are always giving me sh!t).

Sucks you have to be union still, but I'm happy for you.

I'm not sure what my boss makes, some where around 60k. It's all about the state keeping costs down where i work. We have a per-diam that has to be kept down, otherwise the threat of closure is legit.
