Yes, in terms of pro hockey in general, Sam St. Laurent was the absolute last when he retired from the Binghamton Rangers in around 1991 or so. At some point, I posted photos that I took of him in practice around that time.
I'm just generally curious about these kinds of questions - Who was the last straight on kicker in the NFL (Mark Moseley)? Who was the last major league Umpire to wear an over the shoulders chest protector (it was someone in the late 70's). Who was the last NHL player to wear all metal skate blades (I have no idea)? Who was the last maskless goalie (Andy Brown, 1974), and who was the last NHL goaltender to wear the mask.........I have too much free time on my hands I think.
