Only in Buffalo is such mediocrity rewarded.....

"BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sabres general manager Darcy Regier received a contract extension just as the lockout-delayed NHL season is set to start.

The deal had been agreed to before Saturday's announcement by team owner Terry Pegula. Buffalo will open its shortened season Sunday at home against Philadelphia.

Regier, entering his 16th season as Sabres general manager, has overseen a franchise that has reached the Eastern Conference finals four times, most recently in 2007. However, Buffalo has missed the playoffs in three of the past five seasons.

No terms of the extension were released.

"He's a talented guy," Pegula said. "From what I read, maybe not everyone agrees with that, but he has all the resources now. We work very well together and we're looking forward to the future."

Regier was humbled by the announcement.

"I'm very grateful and honored to be able to continue in this capacity," Regier said, "working with this ownership and people that I've had the honor to work with for a lot of years. We continue to grow and improve."

Joke. This jagoff will have to resign to get him out of the organization.

He went out and addressed toughness. And went out and got a potential stud #1 center.

Why are you mad?

I know. He's done well in the last year. But truth be told he should have been relieved before the last lockout. I guess Im fine with him being here this year but to extend him again is what bothers me. He's approaching Harry Sinden territory. At least Sinden had 2 Cups and always had playoff teams. The Sabres miss the playoffs every other year.

What took so long? The lack of toughness should never have become an issue. Also, they've missed the playoff 3 of the last 5 years.

He has done well in maybe 4 of the 15 years. (including this year) Other then that he's been a failure around 75% of the time. So let's reward that? Only in Buffalo!

Yup, that's pretty much it. Back to usual Sabres and just in time for the Boston games? Great. At least we know Scott and Ott aren't poisoned under the Sabres system, so I expect those 2 to show up and do their jobs, but the rest? Unless they rush Cody McCormick back, I don't see anyone else stepping up.
