Bob McKenzie ?@TSNBobMcKenzie
MTL trades Erik Cole to DAL for Michael Ryder.
Smart trade for Dallas. They could use the muscle.

Just heard that too.
Don't like hearing him coming back to the same division as Boston.

Eric Cole has been brutal and is on a long term, big money contract.
Ryder is a UFA come seasons end.
Win for Montreal.

Noooooo!
Neal for Goligoski and now this.
Why would you give a pick away for a player on a bad contract...for one who is on a short term one?
Robbery by Montreal.

There was rumors Cole was gonna hang them up after this year. He was really pissed at the way the Union handled the lockout

I was just looking at the value of a third rounder in this year's draft. Some of the guys who will be available in the 3rd round might've went in the 1st or early 2nd round last year... (e.g. Shea Theodore, who is a 6"2 D-man with 16 goals so far this year, more than last year's 4th overall pick Griffin Reinhart).

He would do Dallas a huge favor by retiring.

That's crazy and makes this look even worse for Dallas. Good info, Canucko.

Wow. A third rounder too? Is Garth Snow in charge there?

Cole is signed for one more year. I think the contract status is not what some of you are making this to be. Now, I don't love the added third rounder, but Cole is faster, bigger, more physical, and vocal. All good things for this team I liked Ryder, and I'm not trying to homer this opinion and say this was a steal for Dallas, but considering we likely would have lost Ryder for nothing after this year, and what Cole does bring, I don't see this so lopsided. It's one more year contract wise, Cole has the same offensive upside as Ryder, and brings a bigger, more physical game than Ryder. What am I missing, from those that call this a clear win for Montreal?

The fact that Eric Cole has sucked this year and seems done

These guys were drafted in the same year. Cole made the NHL first in 01-02, at 23 years old. Ryder came up in 03-04, also at 23 years old.
Cole's year by year goal totals: 16, 14, 18, 30, 29, 22, 18, 11, 26, 35, and 3 so far this year.
Ryder scored 25, 30, 30, 14, 27, 18, 18, 35, and 6 so far this year.
Cole's career ppg: .634
Ryder's career ppg: .631
I didn't realize Cole's numbers were that good. I knew he scored a lot of goals but I didn't realize his assist totals were that high.

Considering the season Cole had last season (the Habs games I saw he was more or less their best forward all those games) I don't think it's that big a mistake for Dallas. In a straight up trade with no picks and ignoring their contracts (which is a bit silly I know) there is no way I'd take Ryder over Cole.

I don't think anyone will debate you on Cole > Ryder, but this trade involved contracts and picks. With the cap going way down next year this is a big win for Montreal.

That's assuming Cole is done. Perhaps he is but I still have last season reminding me that he is a quality player with a lot of heart.

Both players can suck my left nut, but that 3rd rounder makes this a steal for the Habs. Isn't the Stars owner the guy that wanted a Hamilton team?
