Rushed to hospital in cardiac arrest. Just taken off life support after no brain activity visible.

Terrible, I was hoping this was a hoax earlier.

The LAPD is now saying they have not confirmed his death and that erroneous reports were sent to media outlets.

I'm glad he's alive but this is fucked up. I don't believe anything I read or hear anymore...

Two local Philly radio stations have been playing a tribute all day since news of his 'death' broke...

Sounds like there is no real hope of survival, but that he is still alive.

Family apparently has a DNR and it would appear that there is no brain activity and he has been taken off life support. I was totally caught off guard and stunned by the news. One of the greats.

A really brutal blow to read this today at work. If he has no brain function, he's dead. He's one of my top 5 artists; a tremendous musical talent and from anything I've ever read a decent human being as well.

I'm so happy I saw him again this past June. It was a perfect summer night and a perfect show. Tom rocked to the very end of his life. I know he lived hard, but 66 still seems too young.

Perhaps this isn't the thread, but is there any doubt that TP&HB are a Top 10 North American band of all-time?

Terrible news. I just saw him in Philadelphia a couple of months ago.

Easily my favorite of all the so-called "singer/songwriters". Mike Campbell is a criminally underrated guitarist as well.

Last saw them in 1980. John McEnroe and Vitas Gerulaitis sat a row behind me. This was just after McEnroe had lost that monumental Wimbledon final to Borg. And I had better seats!

66 is definitely too young in the 21st century. I always liked Petty, but not a deep catalogue fan. Saw him in 87-88 at Brendan Byrne in NJ. Chris Whitley opened, which is a random thing to remember.

Ha ha. That's like me at Super Bowl XXX. 5 rows behind was The Admiral - David Robinson. I thought I was something special.

In case anyone hasn't seen this yet, the Florida Gators - LSU game this past weekend included a moving tribute to Tom Petty:
